Joby flies a Cessna Caravan fully autonomously coast to coast

Joby Aviation announced on September 18 that it had completed the first fully autonomous flight to cross the United States: a converted Cessna Caravan, designated J208, flew 3,199 miles from Concord, California to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with zero control inputs from the onboard safety pilot. The aircraft was supervised remotely from operations centers up to 2,323 miles away — Joby's Autonomy Headquarters in California and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, where the route made a stop.

The onboard autonomy stack — automated taxi, takeoff, cruise and landing — traces back to Joby's 2024 acquisition of Xwing, originally developed for automated cargo operations. Joby cites more than 400 autonomous flights and 800 automated flight hours to date, including demonstrations across three major U.S. military exercises, among them the Air Force's Agile Flag exercise.

The flight is part of Joby's 2026 'Electric Skies' tour, designed to demonstrate use cases spanning commercial freight, medical transport, disaster response and defense logistics. The converted aircraft remains FAA-certified on its original airframe, and the operation draws on existing partnerships — including the eLIFT-NC healthcare logistics coalition with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and the uFLY coalition in Utah.
